Election Day has come and passed, and Joe Biden is the clear winner. Since then, President Donald Trump has repeatedly rejected the results, claiming election fraud and conspiracy against him. He is currently refusing to begin the governmental transition process. This situation resembles a prediction by John Chin, Joseph Wright, and David Carter in their PVG piece “Could a Coup d’Etat Happen in the United States in 2020?

In their post they describe several scenarios, including autogolpes—or self-inflicted coups-from-within. It makes for stomach-churning reading, especially in a context where many Republicans have, so far, been either supportive or mum about Trump’s recalcitrance. But Chin, Wright, and Carter also predicted that the United States and its institutions would resist threats to democracy.
